Rain, rain, go away! BMW of San Antonio wants to make sure that you’re safe during this rainy season.

Rainy season is all too real in Texas. And unfortunately for us, we can’t get “rain days”. Whether the roads are wet or not, life goes on. On days it’s rainy, you want to factor in the traffic being slower than usual. This may inevitably make you late for everything you have going on for that day.

That being said, it is extremely important to not rush when the roads are wet. More accidents happen in the rain, and part of it is because people lose control of their vehicles.

What is hydroplaning?

You would know if you have ever hydroplaned. It is when your tires are not able to gain the traction needed to stop. Consequently, you end up sliding on the road uncontrollably. The roads have to be covered in water to hydroplane.

BMW of San Antonio wants to provide you with five tips on how you can be a little safer when driving in the rain. (Preventing Hydroplaning.)

  1. Drive slower than usual. Do not rush.

Even if you are late, the faster you drive the more sudden you may have to stop. Also, it is just safer to drive slower on rainy days. Because there is more risk on the roads.

  1. Avoid driving through large puddles.

Driving over water and large puddles will make your entire vehicle more wet, and you are more likely to hydroplane in wet areas.

  1. Stay Calm

You don’t think clearly if you are panicking. The best thing to do is try to not react too quickly and stay calm.

  1. Do not brake dramatically.

Our first reaction is to slam on the brakes whenever we feel like we are losing control or when we know we are needing to stop immediately. The best thing to do is to “pump the brakes.” Gently let your foot on and off the pedal to slow down. Driving more slowly will also allow you to stop faster when needed.

  1. If you skid, do not turn into the skid.

If you start to skid, stay calm and try to keep your wheel as straight as possible. Hold on with a firm grip, and wait until you regain control.

Be safe out there!
