As the auto world gets more and more eco-conscious, efforts to ramp-up lower impact vehicles are on the rise and BMW is no exception. In addition to their already all-electric models, the Bavarian automaker intends to offer plug-in versions of every vehicle in the new BMW lineup.
If you're anything like our San Antonio, TX staff you're a fan of gas/electric technology. Not only does it increase efficiency, supplemental electric motors can drive up performance, too. The pending BMW X5 PHEV backs that assertion up quite well.
Under the hood this model features a traditional four-cylinder engine. However, it is mated with a 70kW electric motor to yield some serious hybrid muscle. In fact, it can drive just under 20 miles on all electric power. Plus, you can cruise right along at speeds of up 75 mph courtesy of that battery pack.
Combine the force of both power sources and things really get interesting. The crossover can go from 0-60 mph in under seven seconds and the model achieved a stunning 62 mpg on the European test cycle. While it has yet to make its way stateside it is heading into production soon and clearly, our BMW of San Antonio staff is excited to get behind the wheel.
