In the last few years the big buzz in the automotive industry has been on creating more fuel-efficient cars, and with rising gas prices this definitely makes sense. But at BMW of San Antonio, we think you can be conscious about your environmental impact and still have a ton of fun on the road. In order to prove this, BMW recently signed a deal with TCM (Toyota Motor Corporation) that will have both automakers working to create vehicles that are both fun to drive and fuel efficient.

This deal can be broken in to four main components, allow our new BMW ambassadors at 8434 Airport Blvd to divulge them :

  • Creation of a new fuel cell system: Aside from jointly developing a new platform, BMW and TMC will collaborate to develop codes and standard for hydrogen infrastructure in order to promote the popularization of fuel-cell cars.
  • The development of a new sport vehicle, a joint venture: Combining both automakers' impressive tech, BMW and TMC aim to produce a new performance-driven vehicle by the end of 2013.
  • Researching how to make vehicles more lightweight (and therefore more fuel-efficient): Both BMW and TMC aim to create new materials by exploring the potential of reinforced composites. This stands to benefit the aforementioned sports car as well other models, such as the M3 Coupe and 5 Series Gran Turismo.
  • Advancement of lithium-battery technology: A better battery makes a more efficient vehicle. For the ActiveHybrid 7, BMW and TMC plan to develop a new lithium-air battery that offers a greater energy density than current lithium-ion ones.

Given the ambitious nature of these objectives, further details are sure to surface regarding each one in the near future. That said, we recommend staying tuned to the BMW of San Antonio blog for more information. The moment we hear anything, we'll post it here to read.
