A little while ago, Jason Harper, a writer and auto enthusiast representing Bloomberg had the opportunity to take three BMW vehicles, each representing a different portion of the Munich-based luxury auto brand's green efforts in terms of new, more efficient engines. Along the way, Harper gleaned quite a gold mine of information about the brand's progress, and BMW of San Antonio, serving the Austin area, is here to relay his adventures.

Harper tested three popular models including the BMW X1, which is the company's smallest-ever SUV and holds a four-cylinder engine; a diesel-powered variant of the BMW 3-Series, the brand's most popular sedan; and a vehicle fitted with a unique and surprising new three-cylinder engine the company has been working on. You will probably see this engine under the hood of the BMW i8 hybrid sports car in the near future.

What Harper found is that BMW is more dedicated than ever to creating fuel-efficient engines that still have a powerful kick. In concern to the new 1.5-liter, turbocharged, three-cylinder, engine, it seems to be a strange move for the company, which is known for its six-cylinders, but basically-it's a six-cylinder looped in half, meaning it produces between five and 15 percent less CO2 emissions than a four-cylinder. This engine was also fuel-saving, just like the others.
