The BMW X1 Will Have a New Plug-In Hybrid Version in 2019

The BMW X1 was the first-ever front-wheel drive-based BMW to ever be sold in America. Debuting in 2019 is another new first for the German automaker. A new, plug-in hybrid variant will be coming out that will also be the first in its segment. This hybrid model will likely be a facelifted model, without a lot of obvious changes. The rear tailgate will have a little camouflage, as will the taillights, but the actual taillights themselves won’t really look any different. There may also be a bit of camo on the headlights and the front fascia.

BMW Reveals Plans for Subscription Service

BMW recently announced it would be joining the fleet of automakers testing car subscriptions services. BMW’s program, called Access BMW will first be offered by a dealer in Tennessee beginning next month.


Vehicle manufacturers are beginning to see the popularity of subscription services rise among younger consumers whose shopping behavior is shaped by purchasing one bundled service. Subscription services combine multiple elements of vehicle ownership into one convenient monthly payment. Ultimately the vehicle owner doesn’t have to source and pay for items such as insurance and maintenance separate to the monthly leasing payment.

iX3 EV expected for 2020

BMW recently confirmed that their first fully electric SUV would be an iX3, debuting by 2020. In addition, they had previously announced that by 2025, 25 of their models will be fully electric. A concept version of the iX3 will debut at the Beijing Motor Show next month, as confirmed by BMW CEO Harald Kruger.


At the Frankfurt Motor Show last September, the i Vision concept was unveiled, and claimed to go 370 miles on a single charge.

BMW Collaborates With Drone Racing League

BMW is trying their hand at a new skill: building the world’s fastest racing drone. They are collaborating with the Drone Racing League (DRL) in an attempt to break the current Guinness world speed record set by the reigning fastest drone and to further develop high-performance and professional racing drones.


BMW is offering its technical expertise and wind tunnel at its Aerodynamic Test Center to help the league break the record that was set with the DRL RacerX drone. They also plan to bring a DRL race to their BMW Welt exhibition center and museum in Munich, Germany.

A year after its launch, a Michigan-based startup shuttle company, May Mobility, is making big strides toward city shuttle autonomy with the help of BMW.


The startup’s mission is to connect communities through full-service self-driving fleets in controlled environments such as residential areas, corporate campuses, and business districts. The company has plans to launch commercial operations later this year.
