BMW has recently questioned the need for car keys, and the days of frantically searching for them through your house, purse, pockets, etc. may soon be over.

At the recent Frankfurt Motor Show, a BMW board member stated that many--if not all--of its customers carry a smartphone with them. Our phones have become our likelihood and do many other day-altering tasks for us than just making calls. BMW’s smartphone app already allows users to control various functions of their car from their fingertips, therefore the ability to use a phone as means to opening/starting a car could easily replace physical keys.
We already know that many vehicles provide a push-to-stop/start feature, but BMW is taking that a step further by seriously looking into whether the move away from a physical car key fob is feasible.
While this idea is tremendously convenient in theory, there are some obvious safety concerns that could surround a smartphone app taking the place of a car key. Phones, no matter how smart, will always come with the potential of malfunctioning. Then there’s the topic of user errors, such as losing the phone, or it getting stolen.
While this idea would take the hassle out of misplacing or forgetting your car keys, there are still more details to explore and iron out before anything solid can be set into motion. What would you think if BMW keys were to become extinct and be replaced by smartphone capabilities?
