Smart phones, smart cars, why not make smart license plates a thing too? One company already has this concept in the works and over 100,000 digital license plates are scheduled to hit U.S. roads in 2018.

The Reviver license plate (rPlate) is changing the way we think of traditional license plates and their capabilities. The California-based company debuted its product in early 2017 at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) during an event created solely for the purpose of showcasing connected car technology. This would radically change what car owners have been accustomed to since the early 1900s.
The digital plate resembles that of a modern tablet such as a kindle, with a dimly-lit interface. It recalls updated vehicle registration information as well as public service messaging such as Amber Alerts, which have become increasingly important on roadways when vehicles are involved in the abduction of children.
The Reviver plate consists of a monochrome display, wireless connectivity, a battery, and a processor which allows it to do the following:
Instantly update registration status so car owners would no longer have to deal with stickers
Instant registration updates could also allow for monthly payment options
Easy flexibility between interchanging plate pride, allowing you to show support for a specific cause or display a personal style
Indicate parking status in public lots, or in accordance with parking apps and services
Reduce theft and fraud since the plate won’t work if it’s stolen from the vehicle it’s assigned to
Various forms of advertising
While Reviver is still working out issues such as how much the plates will cost, who pays that cost, what limits each state may place on extraneous messaging, etc., they are ready to deploy 100,000 plates on cars in California which have already been given the green light--mostly fleet and commercial vehicles for now. Florida, Arizona, and Texas are close behind in the adoption process. Local state legislature and DMV offices will have to review the technology to fully understand how to incorporate it into our current system, but it looks promising.
With such dynamic technology being presented in the automotive division, there are big things to look forward to down the road!
