The new and improved BMW X5 is expected to be introduced mid-2018, but one of the most notable changes won’t be visible. The G05 X5 will be built based on the CLAR platform, a modular architecture that reduces the final weight of all models due to lightweight materials such as aluminum or CFRP, a compound that will be used for certain elements and reinforcements of the frame. In other words: it will be lighter on its feet and offer better MPG figures as well.

On top of the new platform architecture, it will also be getting a new engine featuring petrol engines. The X5 will be available in sDrive40i, xDrive40i, and xDrive50i once available in the U.S.

While these names are familiar to Beemer lovers, the engines won’t be. The 40i badge is a revised version of the B58 3-liter straight six engine that has changed so drastically it’s considered a new engine altogether. The B58TU will produce 335 horsepower in models without the M Performance logo on them which is a 15 horsepower increase in itself compared to what we’re used to on say, the 340i, for example. In addition, the N63 4.4-liter V8 will also be getting a facelift, making it a new engine altogether. Due to the extensive changes, it will be producing 465 horsepower and will also be different from the one in the M550i model.

The fate of the diesel engine future is still uncertain outside of the U.S. where the X5 will also get diesel mills offered under the hood, but they won’t be completely new in the case for petrol.
