BMW aims to stay ahead of the curve in the ever-changing automotive industry. Between new technologies, safety features, and innovations, it’s no surprise they intend to be the first to introduce a hydrogen-powered car in the next five years, and the company’s top officials say they are on track to do so.
BMW is committed to introducing hydrogen fuel to the masses while other automakers are solely focusing on electric powertrains. BMW has explained that hydrogen is ideal for long-distance zero-emissions driving in comparison to a conventional gasoline or diesel-burning car.
Very few details about the model are known right now. The fuel-cell concept vehicle will be based on a regular BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo and uses a 245 horsepower electric motor and high-voltage battery. The hydrogen is mounted in between the two axles in a tunnel tank.

The lack of infrastructure is the main hurdle in making this reality. The German government is committed to building more fueling stations, but BMW expects its hydrogen-powered car to be a low-volume model. They anticipate the infrastructure to grow at a rapid pace, and predict the feasibility of introducing a hydrogen car to the public after 2025.
