By 2025 BMW Group is committed to unveiling 25 electric cars. Out of those, 12 will be battery powered. The first two vehicles have already been revealed: the BMW i8 Roadster and the MINI S E ALL4.

Based on their schedule, the electric MINI will debut in early 2019 and an electric X3 will come in mid-2020. It’s rumored that the anticipated iNext would follow suit in early 2021 and might be badged an i9. The iNext will be a crossover and the first for BMW to offer the German’s self-driving system and 5th generation batteries, which are said to enable a range of over 400 miles on a single charge.

Beginning in 2021, BMW Group’s platforms will accommodate internal combustion, hybrid, or pure electric powertrains. This should reduce costs and streamline production, as opposed to the complex platforms the i3 and i8 are both based on from years past.

Two separate platforms will organize the electric car divisions. One for compact cars and one for small, mid-size, and full-size cars. The platforms will be updated versions of the UKL and CLAR designs.

BMW Group will still continue to offer different motors, as well as the size of the battery, to accommodate various budgets. The most powerful cars are expected to produce in the ballpark of 800 horsepower.

As the electrification trend intensifies, BMW Group will continue to monitor the demand of its popular models and offer plug-in hybrid powertrains. By 2025, a good portion of the BMWs on the road could be fully electric.
