Ever since 2011 rumors have been abuzz about the likelihood of BMW building an X2 crossover. We were first introduced at the 2016 Paris Auto Show, but new images of BMW’s “sports activity coupe” have been recently teased and now we finally know more.

BMW is calling it “an exploration trip into its future environment--the urban jungle,” with still a ways to go before its highly anticipated world premiere. But underneath its high-tech persona it actually appears to retain most of the basic styling aspects we recognize from the German automaker. Although the X2 has a more conventional shape, the dual-panel sunroof remains the same while some of the front and rear attributes have been altered.

Other details regarding the styling of the BMW X2 have been kept mum, but we do know it will be based on the same UKL platform that supports the X1 as well as the new MINI Countryman. We can also expect it to share the X1’s 4-cylinder powertrain options, as well as feature standard front-drive and optional xDrive AWD. Rumors are floating that an M version may also be an option at some point, also.

An official launch date has yet to be announced, but the production version is expected to be unveiled in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show. We can assume the BMW X2 is scheduled to debut later this year.
