BMW’s flagship all-electric vehicle, the i3, just got a slight makeover. The German automaker unveiled the 2018 model and changes we can expect.
The 2018 i3 still possesses the same 33 kWh battery pack, enabling it to pack in 124 miles of range. When it was first introduced last year, the new battery pack gave BMW an edge when it came to all-electric range.
The design upgrades will almost be indiscernible. The restyling of the front and rear aprons places more emphasis on the car’s width which portrays the sporty handling of the model. A chrome-design trim strip is also seen running across the full width of the rear to reinforce this.
However, the most notable addition comes in the form of a new sport package called BMW i3s. This will include a “sport driving mode” with “more direct accelerator response and tight steering characteristics.” It includes a slightly higher performance motor (135 kW/184 hp compared to its predecessor: 125 kW/170 hp) and a new sport suspension. BMW notes that it can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 6.9 seconds.
Changes to charging are also important to note, as part of its “360° ELECTRIC” package. BMW states that the new TurboCord EV Charger is the “smallest, lightest, UL-listed portable charger available.” It can achieve Level 1 charging from any regular 120V outlet, in addition to 3.6kW charging from 240V outlets.
The 2018 BMW i3 is still available with the gas range extender option, ConnectedDrive, iDrive 6, and Apple CarPlay.
We’re excited for this model to debut next month at the Frankfurt Motor Show!
