Just one week ago the 2018 BMW M5 was revealed. It is the first high-performance sedan to feature xDrive all-wheel drive. We can also expect a twin-turbo V8 engine that will produce approximately 600 horsepower.
The current M5 has a wider track than that of its predecessor, and for the first time in the model’s history the sedan will now feature a sloping roof crafted from featherweight carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP). This, in part with other elements, allows the 2018 M5 to be 11 pounds lighter than its predecessor. This was made possible by other contributions such as new bonnet and wing components like aluminum and carbon fiber. It is also fitted with M compound brakes, which are lighter than the conventional grey cast iron and aid in the M5’s weight loss. The vehicle’s dynamic potency is achieved with the six-piston fixed calipers and the front and single-piston floating calipers at the rear, with some help from the perforated, inner-vented brake discs. The optional M carbon ceramic brakes also shave off 50 pounds, allowing it to withstand greater force.
With all these lightweight materials combined, the M5 is able to achieve a fuel efficiency of 26.9 miles to the gallon. As automakers look to composites to meet demanding fuel economy standards, this becomes very important. BMW has already been a leader in this capacity with its i Series and 7 Series vehicles.
The 2018 BMW M5 will be debuted at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show in September and is projected to enter showrooms in spring of 2018. Official pricing will be announced at a later time.
