The National Parks Service and the Department of Energy is collaborating with BMW to expand America’s electric vehicle (EV) network of charging stations across the U.S. which is a frequent request of EV users. Up to 100 new stations will be installed and BMW says they will be compatible with every electric car sold in America.
The first new charging station was unveiled at a recent press conference held at the West Orange laboratory which belonged to Thomas Edison, and was where he worked on an electric car battery 100 years ago. Four stations were added to the visitors parking area of the Thomas Edison National Historic Park in New Jersey. “I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the next 100 years of the BMW Group and National Park Service than by making America’s national parks more accessible to drivers of electric vehicles,” said Ludwig Willisch, head of BMW Group Region Americas.

Specific sites for the new charging stations are still yet to be determined. The collaboration will look at all 417 current national parks and decide where the new additions make the most sense, but criteria will include driving distances and visitor demand.
Willisch also stated, "Together with our partners, I hope that we can channel a little of Edison's spirit and, in the same way that he made electric power widely available, make electric vehicle charging more widely available for everyone."
