Sometimes we forget just how much Earth gives to us (i.e. oxygen, that’s a biggie.) We are all guilty of litter and unnecessary exhaust fumes, but being mindful of our actions when it comes to owning a vehicle can be life-giving to Mother Earth.

The use of vehicles is undoubtedly linked to change in climate, pollution, and even disease. But no matter the type of car you drive, there are many maintenance measures all owners can take to make sure they are being environmentally friendly! By following these steps, you can help protect the environment, which is something we can all pitch in to achieve.

  1. Keep your car tuned regularly for optimum performance. Regular engine checks allow a vehicle to reduce emissions, improve efficiency, and even save you money. Burning less gas results in less pollution and even prevents car trouble in the future.

  2. Be a smart driver. By avoiding sudden starts and stops and respecting the speed limit, you’re improving your vehicle’s fuel economy. Other tips such as consolidating errands into one trip, minimizing the use of the air conditioner, parking in shady areas, and utilizing cruise control are also good tips to be mindful of.

  3. Lighten up. By removing any unnecessary “stuff” out of your car, you’re removing the stress it causes on your engine, and in turn, the increase of gas usage. If you can live without carrying it around in your trunk, it’s best to do so.

  4. Regularly check and replace dirty air filters. Air filters that are clogged with dust, dirt, bugs, etc. causes the engine to lose power. Your vehicle’s performance and acceleration will improve with this simple change.

  5. Don’t overfill your tank. When filling up your gas tank, be sure to stop fueling when the nozzle stops pumping! Topping off your tank can potentially release harmful vapors into the environment because your tank needs some room to allow the gas to expand.

Finally, don’t be afraid to ask your mechanic questions that could not only extend the life of your car, but also protect the earth. Following these tips and considering the harmful pollutants that our vehicles put into the air we breathe will put us on a good track to restoring the planet we love. On Earth Day and all days, let’s give back to our planet and keep her beautiful!
