If you're in the market for a compelling crossover, the 2018 BMW X1 may be a great fit. Back from getting a few minor tweaks in this year's model update, the X1 packs a big punch in a small frame.

Available in five trims--base, Convenience, M Sport, Premium, and M Sport Premium--the X1 has many features to boast. All-wheel drive is available on each, and all X1s feature a turbo 4- and 8-speed automatic engine under the hood. A backup camera is now standard, as well as BMW's ConnectedDrive in-car concierge service.

The distinct kidney grilles, front bumpers, and sleek shape around the sides are giveaways of the handsome BMW bodystyle. A large infotainment screen sits atop the dash to accommodate passengers and and assist with technology preferences. Rich wood and leather accents also aid in the attractive presence of the cabin.

When it comes to fuel economy, the X1 manages to achieve 22 miles per gallon in the city, 31 on the highway, and 25 when equipped with all-wheel drive.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration awarded the X1 an overall safety rating of five stars and the IIHS gave the X1 a Top Safety Pick award after it received "Good" scores (the highest possible) in all crash categories. The X1 safety features include forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and active lane control.
