An eight-speed automatic transmission and an automatic start-stop system also come standard on all 2017 BMW X3 models. The start-stop system saves fuel by shutting off the engine when the vehicle comes to a stop, and starting again when you take your foot off the brake. The X3 sDrive 28i and xDrive28i are both powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 240 horsepower. The EPA estimates that a combined 24 miles per gallon is achieved for both.

While standard safety features include antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, automatic brakes, and the BMW Assist emergency communications system, optional features are available as well. This includes GPS vehicle location, front and rear parking sensors, active blind-spot monitoring, a forward collision mitigation system, and a lane departure warning. It scored "GOOD" (the highest rating) in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's ratings in the following categories: moderate overlap front test results; side impact test results; rear crash protection results; roof strength test results.
