Coming in at the smallest crossover in the BMW lineup, the BMW X1 is just as luxurious and capable as the rest of its competition. Its performance capabilities fall between that of of the 3 Series and an all-wheel-drive SUV.

Back from a complete overhaul last year, the 2017 BMW X1 got one major change: the addition of a front-drive sDrive28i model to the lineup. Representing the first front-drive/transverse-engine setup, its turbocharged 4-cylinder engine allows brisk movement and good fuel economy in both city and highway. However, if you're looking to push it to the limits, the M Sport suspension is your best bet. The X1 is a lively vehicle, but it's no Jeep--it still drives like a car.

The interior features are just as classy as the exterior, thanks to the two beautiful shades of French-stitched leather, dark-oak paneling (optional), matte chrome, and an assortment of knobs and buttons that take all the work out of adjusting your personal settings.

The second row is one of the more surprising upgrades in the 2017 X1. Passengers now have 1.5 more inches of legroom in the standard trim, or for an additional $300 slide-and-recline seating option, 2.6 inches. Behind the seats, 27-cubic feet is available for storage, with an additional four cubic feet under the floor panel. One of the most convenient features is the power-operated hatch, which can be opened by swinging a foot under the rear bumper.
