By 2021 BMW wants to try their hand at a ride-hailing service. BMW is working on a Level 3 autonomous system that can operate at speeds up to 81 miles per hour. According to Dr. Klaus Buettner, BMW’s head of the autonomous program, the system will be operational by 2021, when the BMW Group will also be attempting to launch a pilot program for ride-hailing fleets that may use Level 4-5 autonomous functions.
While it continues to build a better product for consumers, BMW is also deciding whether to partner with companies like Lyft or Uber to launch a taxi system. But getting a large number of cars ready for the rad means an extensive amount of texting. In order to accomplish everything, BMW built two 7-Series prototypes, one with Level 3 autonomy, and the other with Level 4 /5. To the unsuspecting bystander, you can’t tell these cars have numerous gadgets, sensors, and cameras working together to unanimously operate the vehicle on their own. The LiDAR sensors are in the bumper, and others are in the trunk and on the roof.
BMW also continues to emphasize the importance of their partnership with Intel and Mobileye. The trunk of its cars are filled with computers and other equipment, depending on Intel’s background in back-end computing will help its vehicles maintain a connection with its servers and one another.
