Supercharged: The BMW i3 Gets a New Battery and Other Exciting Updates

Originally introduced as a concept vehicle at the International Motor Show Germany in 2011, the BMW i3 electric vehicle has grown in leaps in bounds since its official launch in 2013. Initially, the BMW i3 was designed with a smallish 60 Ah battery that provided the car a driving range of just 81 miles. In 2017, the i3 finally saw its first battery upgrade up to a 94 Ah battery which increased the range an additional 34 miles for a total range of 115. New for the 2019 iteration, the fully-updated BMW i3 arrives standard with the biggest battery to date: 120 Ah. This brand new battery will increase the electric vehicle’s range up to 153 miles--almost double the original’s!

Along with a supercharged new battery, the updated 2019 BMW i3 comes with a new exterior color option, a new color for the upholstery, and full LED headlights for the Ultimate Driving Experience. Previously only available with the Navigation Professional package, the new i3 will also feature the iDrive 6.0 infotainment and navigation system for effortless access to important information right on the dashboard. There are even an available Wi-Fi hotspot and a wireless charging mat for constant connectivity and charge no matter where the new i3 may take you.

BMW’s eDrive Technology is what enables BMW cars to produce as few emissions as possible while still providing that excellent German performance we all know and love. The 2019 BMW i3 comes with an electric motor that generates up to 170 horsepower and can accelerate from 0-60 miles per hour in 7.2 seconds. The slightly more powerful BMW i3s will top out at 181 horsepower and can go from 0-60 miles per hour in just 6.8 seconds. With the introduction of the larger battery, the electric motor in both i3 models has even less of an impact on the environment as it works hard to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
