iX3 EV expected for 2020

BMW recently confirmed that their first fully electric SUV would be an iX3, debuting by 2020. In addition, they had previously announced that by 2025, 25 of their models will be fully electric. A concept version of the iX3 will debut at the Beijing Motor Show next month, as confirmed by BMW CEO Harald Kruger.

At the Frankfurt Motor Show last September, the i Vision concept was unveiled, and claimed to go 370 miles on a single charge.

However, the next vehicle to get the green light for production will be the iNEXT concept. Expected to be manufactured in Germany, he also mentioned that the iNEXT concept will spawn a production version, which will be the manufacturer’s “technology flagship.” We can assume that will mean it will serve as a “halo car” for BMW which will usher in the newest features. It debuted as a Level 4 autonomous vehicle last year, so it may also be used to push toward those technologies.

Additional details on the iX3 are slim, however. So far there has been no attempt to make a hybrid model of the popular SUV. Kruger also mentioned that the this focus on an all-electric X3 is a key component of BMW’s “huge push” on luxury and it’s X-range of off-roaders.

“We are using scalable modular kits for electrification,” he said. “From 2020, we will be able to fit all model series with any type of drive.”
