BMW Collaborates With Drone Racing League

BMW is trying their hand at a new skill: building the world’s fastest racing drone. They are collaborating with the Drone Racing League (DRL) in an attempt to break the current Guinness world speed record set by the reigning fastest drone and to further develop high-performance and professional racing drones.

BMW is offering its technical expertise and wind tunnel at its Aerodynamic Test Center to help the league break the record that was set with the DRL RacerX drone. They also plan to bring a DRL race to their BMW Welt exhibition center and museum in Munich, Germany.

While this may seem like an interesting partnership, BMW has said that drone racing isn’t too far-removed from motorsports. “It is a very competitive type of racing, characterized by the interplay of extremely high-performance material and digital technology,” said BMW Brand Experience head Jorg Reimann.

The Drone Racing League has been growing rapidly after making an official deal with ESPN and releasing a competitor-friendly DRL Racer 3 drone. Last year, DRL hand-built the DRL RacerX, the fastest racing drone on earth which set the world record for the fastest ground speed by a battery-powered remote-controlled quadcopter. It reached a speed of 165.2 miles per hour.
