US to get Wireless Charging Pad

Wouldn’t it be nice to have your electric BMW vehicle wirelessly charged in less than four hours? That’s the intent when BMW Group makes their wireless charging pad accessible in the United States later this year. They are set to expand the availability of this technology for their plug-in vehicles, which has previously only been accessible in Europe.

The charging pad uses an inductive cord built into the car to charge at 3.2kW per hour and charge the plug-in’s battery in 3.5 hours from empty. Owners need a 220-volt outlet to connect the pad, but once the driver places the vehicle over it, the BMW’s infotainment system detects the pad’s system and asks the driver to begin charging.

At first, the charging pad will only be available in the US for the 530e iPerformance plug-in hybrid. It will also be limited to specific dealers, after the BMW North America team determines which could best sell the device and what partners would be needed to install it in customer garages. While a few factors like cost are still uncertain, it will be a monumental moment in the timeline of electric vehicles.
